The 33rd edition of the World Masters is being held in Leisure World, Bridlington. Michael van Gerwen is 17 years and 174 days when he becomes the youngest World Master in history. He wins his matches with great confidence. Darryl Fitton is defeated in the quarterfinals, Mark Webster in the semis. In the final, Van Gerwen meets Martin Adams. Wolfie is almost there when he cannot throw the double to finish. The Dutchman takes the win, being the second Dutchman to win the title.

Reigning champion Raymond van Barneveld did not come back to defend his title. After a disappointing World Cup final against Jelle Klaasen, he turns his back to the BDO and joins the PDC. Many star players will follow him in the years to come.
