For Michael van Gerwen, the World Grand Prix 2012 is the final confirmation that he is back with a vengeance. In the months leading up to the tournament he has already won several floor tournaments, but in Dublin he confirms that he belongs in the global top again.

The tournament as usual is played early October at the City West Hotel in Dublin. Van Gerwen beats Colin Lloyd, Adrian Lewis, Andy Hamilton, Wes Newton and Mervyn King in the final. Mighty Mike falls behind 0-3 and 1-4 in the finals, but manages a fantastic comeback to a 6-4 victory. Van Gerwen is the first player to win the World Grand Prix without being seeded.

Defending champion and No. 1 in the world Phil Taylor looses in the second round to the Scot Robert Thornton who had defeated him earlier that year in the final of the UK Open. Thornton himself does not go beyond the quarterfinals in which Mervyn King is too strong. King will make the final by beating Brendan Dolan in the semifinals. The Northern Irishman is doing very well for the second year in a row in Dublin after reaching the final in 2011.
