WDF Europe Cup Men Pairs 1980

Thirteen countries travelled to Ebbw Vale in Wales in October 1980 for the second European Cup. England with a strong team consisting of John Lowe, Eric Bristow, Tony Brown and Cliff Lazarenko were obviously the big favourites to extend their European title, won two years ago in Denmark.

The champions of the first edition of the Europe Cup Pairs Lowe & Bristow were soon ousted from the tournament; they lost in the second round to the Scottish pair of Jocky Wilson and Angus Ross. This Scottish duo reaches the semi-finals, where they lost 4-2 to the Swedish pair Stefan Lord and Björn Enqvist. The other Scottish duo Rab Smith & Alistair Forrester also reached the semi-finals where they beat the strong English pair Tony Brown and Cliff Lazarenko.

The final of the pairs event would decide the second place in the overall standings. In this extremely hard fought battle with good darts the Swedes lead 1-0 , the Scots came back to 1-1. Despite a 180 by Forrester, the Swedes took the third leg. In the fourth leg it was just the opposite when Lord scored a 180, but made the Scots took the leg and made it two a piece. The fifth leg was won by Sweden with a 76 finish from Stefan Lord in 19 darts. The sixth leg was also won by the Swedish duo giving them the second place in the overall standings and of course the pairs title.
