WDF Europe Cup Men Pairs 1978

After the success of the first World Cup in 1977 in London, it was decided to hold the first European Cup darts from 1 September to 3 September in the Danish capitol of Copenhagen. Eleven countries participate in the inaugural event including Belgium and Netherlands.

The first European Cup Darts went convincingly to top favourite England. Yet England did not win all events in the tournament.

In the pairs event, surprises happen when Tony Ridler and John Assiratti from Wales are beaten in the first round by the Danish pair Jan Larsen and Kaj Mortensen 4-3. Belgium (Arnold Vandepoele and Willy Delaere) also surprise everyone by reaching the semi-finals. They beat Sweden and the Republic of Ireland on their way. Unfortunately for them they lose after a tight match to Cliff Lazarenko and Douglas McCarthy with 4-3. In the other semi-final favourite pairings of John Lowe and Eric Bristow meet Alan Evans and Leighton Rees. The English beat the Welsh 4-3.

In a complete English finals John Lowe & Eric Bristow prove too strong for their fellow countrymen Lazarenko & McCarthy beating them 4-0.
