WDF Europe Cup Ladies Pairs 1998

Rica Hotel Oslofjord, Sanvika
From: Thursday 6 August 1998
Till: Sunday 9 August 1998

From August 6 to 9, 1998 26 countries participated in Oslo, Norway for the Europe Cup Darts XI. For many countries it is a distant and expensive trip to Oslo for the ninth edition of the Women’s European Cup. Still a record number of 21 women's teams toe the oche. Big absentee is Belgium with top players Vicky Plum and Sandra Pollet. Just like in 1994, they must remain absent for financial reasons.

In the pairs event we were in the eighth finals when the first little surprise happened. The Dutch ladies (Mieke de Boer & Valerie Maytum) lost to Sweden (Kristiina Korpi & Linda Nilsson) 4-2. In the quarterfinals Wales (Sandra Greatbatch & Gaynor Williams) was defeated by Northern Ireland (Denise Cassidy & Grace Crane) and Scotland (Anne Kirk & Donna Robertson) against Finland (Tarja Salminen and Heli Ohvanainen).

The English ladies (Mandy Solomons & Trina Gulliver) played very strong and only once struggled for a win. That was in their group match against Germany (Heike Ernst & Bianka Strauch), where they needed a deciding leg to win 4-3. In the semi-finals, the English ladies won 4-1 against Northern Ireland and Sweden defeated Finland 4-2. In a thrilling final England narrowly beat the Swedish duo 4-3.
