Raymond van Barneveld comes to Bolton as a World Champion. Jelle Klaasen, Michael van Gerwen and Vincent van der Voort switched the BDO for the PDC and competed in Bolton as well, and Toon Greebe, Rico Vonck, Josephus Schenk and Roland Scholten complete the 8 Dutch contestants. Scholten loses for the first time in his career his first match at the UK Open and Greebe, Vonck, Schenk, Klaasen and Van Gerwen leave the tournament early.

Van Barneveld plays John Part in the last 32 and in a last leg decider; a 111-finish from Barney brings him a beautiful victory. Vincent van der Voort reaches the last 16 as well. In this round Phil Taylor hits a nine darter, Dennis Priestley loses to Phil Taylor, Colin Osborne defeats Mervyn King and both Dutch players go through to the quarterfinals.

In the quarterfinals Van Barneveld faces Phil Taylor and he shows his class. He defeats Taylor 11-4 and sees his fellow Dutchman Van der Voort beat Terry Jenkins 11-10. Van der Voort and Van Barneveld do not play each other in the semis. Van der Voort takes a narrow victory over Colin Osborne (11-10) while Barney ends the hopes of former world number 1 Colin Lloyd. A Dutch final in Bolton and the victory goes to the World Champion. He is the first player ever to successfully defend his UK Open title.
