Michael van Gerwen played the Youth World Championships final for the second time in a row in 2012, but again he was not able to win the tournament. This time James Hubbard proved to be too strong for the Dutchman in the final, which was played before the Premier League final in 2012: 6-3.

Van Gerwen defeated Gino Vos and Shaun Griffiths among others on his way to the final, Hubbard saw off Dirk van Duijvenbode, Paul Barham and Jamie Lewis on the qualification day. Hubbard was the stronger player in the final, leaving a disappointed Van Gerwen. Because of his age, he would not get another chance to become Youth World Champion.
