2009 again would be the year of Phil Taylor. He won his third consecutive Grand Slam of Darts title and thus remains the only champion whose name is on the trophy. On behalf of the BDO, World Champion Ted Hankey and BDO number 1 Tony O'Shea make their debuts. Hankey shows glimpse of class but goes out first round. Tony O'Shea does play very good but in the quarterfinals Phil Taylor is the better player.

On behalf of The Netherlands Raymond van Barneveld, Vincent van der Voort, Co Stompé (winner of the German Darts Championships) and Francis Hoenselaar (as ladies World Champion) participate. Van Barneveld is stopped the semi-final by Phil Taylor. It’s his best ever performance in this tournament. Both Co Stompé and Francis Hoenselaar don’t win any match in the tournament. Vincent van der Voort is responsible for a lot of raised eyebrows. After he loses his first match to Mark Webster, he also loses his second game against the Russian lady Anastasia Dobromyslova. He is the first gentleman to lose to a lady in this tournament. But Van der Voort bounces back from that defeat to win his last group match against Phil Taylor.

The surprising opponent of Phil Taylor in the final is Scott Waites. His wins include Ted Hankey, Gary Anderson, Simon Whitlock and Terry Jenkins. Phil Taylor nearly ended the tournament in style, but in the last leg he misses double 12 for a nine darter. Nevertheless the title is his in 10 darts.
