The Lakeside World Professional Darts Championship 2014 was held from January 7 till 15 and gets a surprising winner in the Dutchman Christian Kist.

Kist puts himself through the qualifying tournament for Lakeside and follows in the footsteps of Jelle Klaasen and Keith Deller by winning the World Championship as a qualifier. In the first round, he is too strong for compatriot Jan Dekker and he immediately throws the highest average of all players in the first round. Then also Geert de Vos, Alan Norris, Ted Hankey and Tony O'Shea are beaten on his way to victory. Remarkably Kist has the highest average in each round, with the exception of the quarterfinals.

Martin Adams, the defending champion and ranked number one, gets to the quarterfinals where he losses to Tony O'Shea who then steams in to the final. For Silverback it is the second World Championship final that he loses.

Another Dutch debutant also does well. Wesley Harms overcomes Martin Phillips, Robbie Green and Paul Jennings ito reach the semi-finals where he loses to O'Shea. Before the semi-finals actually start there is turmoil behind the scenes. Two-time world champion Ted Hankey makes it clear that he will switch to the PDC when the tournament is finished Contractually this is impossible as a semi-finalist, but when Hankey threatens not to play the BDO gives in. Hankey plays but loses to Kist and then switches indeed.
