Raymond van Barneveld's ambition of three consecutive BDO World titles was shattered on the first afternoon of the 2000 Embassy World Professional Darts Championship. Chris Mason had a 100+ average in beating the Dutchman 3 sets to 1. Mason would go on to reach the semi final, which would be a historical one against Ted Hankey.

Ted Hankey was in imperious form throughout the tournament, reaching the quarterfinals without dropping a set. In the semi final he was 4-2 down and had to battle back against Chris Mason to win 5-4. He then took just 46 minutes to beat Ronnie Baxter 6-0 in the final - finishing off with a maximum 170 checkout.

Hankey also hit a record 48 180s in the tournament, including 22 against Mason. In what could have been a disastrous World Championship from a Dutch point of view, Co Stompé rose to the occasion. He beat Andy Smith, Steve Coote and Mervyn King to reach the semi-finals, his best ever result in any World Darts Championship.
