The 1996 Embassy was held from January 3 till 11 in the Lakeside Country Club, Frimley Green and was won by the number six seed Steve Beaton.

It was the fifth time that Beaton took part in the tournament where he had suffered a first round loss in the previous two World Championships as the number one seed. He defeated Co Stompé in the first round and the 1994 world champion John Part in round two. In the quarterfinals, he played a great game against Martin Adams, which was won 4-1, and Andy Fordham was defeated in the semi-finals 5-3. In the final he faced defending champion Richie Burnett. The Welshman had the chance to become the second player after Eric Bristow to retain the World title, but Beaton was simply too strong and won 6-3 in sets.

In 1996 Co Stompé made his debut at Lakeside; he would become one of the familiar faces of Dutch darts besides Raymond van Barneveld and Roland Scholten and frequently made his appearance on this stage.
